The Arab League welcomed the maritime border demarcation agreement between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, reported Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).

Secretary General Esmat Abdelmeguid told reporters the agreement, sealed in Kuwait earlier today, "is a historic achievement."

He said that all inter-Arab conflicts should be resolved through peaceful and diplomatic means, said KUNA.

The agreement opens the door for the two nations to settle a dispute over a gas field with Iran, said Reuters.

Kuwait and Saudi Arabia began talks early last month to demarcate the maritime border after Iran started drilling for gas in the Dorra field, which lies in disputed waters shared by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iran.

Iran halted drilling in the Dorra field to avoid tensions after Kuwaiti protests, according to Reuters - Albawaba.com
