Arafat Cancels Cairo Trip

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has cancelled a planned visit to Cairo for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the Middle East situation Tuesday, Egyptian and Palestinian sources said.

A Palestinian diplomat in Cairo told AFP Arafat was "not coming, because of the situation in Gaza", where Israeli helicopters late Monday bombarded Gazaq City and other Palestinian areas in retaliation for a bomb attack on a Jewish settlers' bus.

Mubarak's presidential office also announced that the meeting had been cancelled. The Egyptian government information service had said Monday that Arafat would travel to Cairo to meet Mubarak Tuesday morning.

The two leaders meet regularly for consultations on the peace process with Israel which has been left in tatters by seven weeks of clashes between Israelis and Palestinians -- CAIRO (AFP)
