Palestinian President Yasser Arafat met late Thursday night with Israeli Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben Ami in Gaza, according to Aljazira television. The report did not mention what the two sides were discussing in the late hours of Thursday night.

According to Agence France Press, the meeting was attended by Palestinian Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo and the Head of Preventative Security Forces, Mohammad Dahlan.

The meeting comes at a time when the Palestinian Intifada is escalating and Israeli Prime Minister Ihud Barak is facing early elections after his abrupt resignation last Sunday only 17 months after he took office. Analysts say that Barak, who is facing internal political problems in his Labor Party, needs a deal with the Palestinians to help him win back the top government seat which will be contested within two months from his resignation according to Israeli law – Albawaba.
