Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat worked the telephones on Thursday, speaking to the Egyptian, French and Jordanian heads of state, in addition to the UN secretary general, updating them on a shaky truce with Israel that risks being overrun by on-going violence, Palestinian officials said.

Arafat spoke with Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak, Jordan's King Abdullah II and France's Jacques Chirac in the afternoon on Thursday to update them on a truce he reached the night before with former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Perez.

The Palestinian leader also received a call from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and the two spoke about an international fact-finding committee that both Israel and the Palestinians have called for to root out the causes of the past five weeks of bloody violence that has left more than 170 people dead, most of them Arabs -- GAZA CITY (AFP)
