Aramex, the global logistics solutions provider, today announced that its veteran runners, Salameh Al Aqra and Mohammed Sweity finished third and 58th respectively at the 24th edition of the 2009 Morocco Marathon des Sables, a gruelling 202-kilometre endurance footrace across the Atlas Mountains, south of Morocco. The ultramarathon, covering a distance equivalent to five regular marathons, is one of the toughest footraces worldwide to be held annually.
Aramex’s athlete Al Aqra, overcame severe cramps and fatigue amidst the most extreme conditions. Al Aqra finished ahead of 812 athletes representing wide international participation in this year’s edition.
“Marathon de Sables is among the toughest challenges for an endurance athlete. As a sportsman constantly looking to explore new limits, Marathon des Sables represents the ideal platform to test your potential against all odds,” said Salameh Al Aqra.
“Although this is an individual sport, preparing for it is a long-term commitment and requires the constant backing of a strong support team. The Aramex team has always been a source of inspiration and support. The encouragement I have received from them has inspired me to give my best at all times, irrespective of the odds. I would like to thank Aramex whom I consider my partner in this win.”
Mohammed Sweity added: “I have now been participating at the Marathon des Sables for four years and have completed the race each time. This has only been possible because of the strong support and confidence reposed in me by the Aramex team.”
“More than just an endurance race, Marathon des Sables represents a celebration of the human spirit, and at Aramex, we very much identify with that spirit. Following their success last year, our athletes Al Aqra and Sweity have again demonstrated the winning qualities of perseverance and teamwork that the Aramex brand represents," said Raji Hattar, Aramex Chief Sustainability and Compliance Officer. “To be among the world’s best endurance athletes is no small achievement, and we are proud of our two runners.”
Aramex has been sponsoring the two world-class Jordanian runners since 2000 in their quest for sporting excellence in competitions around the world.
