Syrian President Hafez Assad will visit Egypt next week for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak about how to resume the peace negotiations with Israel, an Egyptian government daily quoted by AFP as saying Wednesday.

Assad will meet Mubarak in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to brief him "on the Syrian point of view on the basis required for a resumption in the negotiations" between Syria and Israel, Al-Ahram newspaper said.

The Syrian and Egyptian leaders will also discuss the repercussions of Israel's planned withdrawal from south Lebanon, said Arabic News.com.

Mubarak last met Assad when he visited Damascus on Jan 22.

Syrian-Israeli negotiations have been frozen since January over the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 war.

Damascus demands an Israeli withdrawal to the June 4, 1967, line, while Israel wants to retain a strip of land on the northeastern bank of the Sea of Galilee.

Israel has announced its intention to withdraw its troops from south Lebanon by July, with or without an agreement from Beirut and Damascus - (Several Sources)
