It is with a very heavy heart that the American University in Dubai Community learned of the passing of Dr. Mohammad Zebib, Assistant Professor of Economics.
Dr. Zebib was part of the fabric of AUD, having been a faculty member in the School of Business Administration since 1997. Through thick and thin, he was simply a “rock” the AUD family could always count on. His responsiveness knew no limits. He deserved the President’s Award bestowed upon him for Teaching Effectiveness. Over more than a decade, Dr. Mohammed Zebib delivered quantity and quality to 12 generations of AUD business students.
Dr. Zebib understood and loved AUD. He got married and had his three children while at AUD. He wrote his own history in our presence, while helping us write ours. Dr. Zebib will be sorely missed by his students and other members of AUD’s various constituencies.
The AUD Community solemnly gathered in remembrance of Dr. Zebib. Dr. Jihad Nader, Provost and Chief Academic Officer at AUD started by asking for a moment of silence in his honor, and said:
“We gather today to remember and pay homage to a dear colleague and friend, Dr. Mohammed Zebib”.
Mild mannered, low key, humble, friendly is how Dr. Nader described him.
“A smiling face that greets you and stops you for a quick chat in the hallway, just before you go into your classroom and he into his; a powerful teaching machine, with an almost boundless ability and unlimited scope in teaching the various business and economics subjects”.
In his touching eulogy, Dr. Lance de Masi, President of AUD said:
“Dr. Zebib was a classroom teacher at AUD, and teach he did - everything from Accounting to International Business… from Economics to Finance, to undergraduates and in the M.B.A. program. His two Master's degrees, in addition to his Ph.D., enabled him to do that. But his service to the university is explained neither by his academic credentials nor his professional experience, which was formidable and added wisdom to his knowledge. His service to AUD emanated from his personality, his disposition, his character. He was always so willing, so cooperative; and to everyone he touched here, so kind. He very often covered for AUD, and now AUD will have to forever cover for him”.
One by one Dr. Zebib’s students and peers came up to the podium to share how their beloved professor and colleague had affected their lives one way or another. One AUD Alumni commented that Dr. Zebib had taught 3 generations of sisters in her family; “that’s how much he was a part of our family” she said.
Another student commented on how much Dr. Zebib had been there for him during his trying times, remembering all the great advice his professor had given him over the years.
In his turn, Mr. Elias Bou Saab, Executive Vice President of AUD remembered how he used to cross Dr. Zebib in the hallways, stopping for a quick chat on the region’s political events. Bou Saab also urged everyone to spend time with their families, their children and their loved ones; “apart from being a faculty member at AUD, Dr. Zebib was a husband and a father above all. Dr. Zebib will be missed by his children and wife Lina, an AUD alumna… so I urge you all… Life is too short, cherish every moment of it with the ones you love”.
