Direct flights between Baghdad and Cairo international airports will be resumed Tuesday for the first time since UN sanctions, which were imposed on Iraq a decade ago, an Iraqi Airways official was quoted by Japan's official news agency (Kyodo).

The flights will run once a week on Tuesdays on planes chartered by Egyptian tourism firm Intours Co.

An Intours official in Cairo was quoted by Kyodo as saying that "the company has obtained the approval of the UN sanctions committee to start the flights."

Saddam International Airport was declared open for international flights August 17th last year and two days later a Russian airliner, flying on a humanitarian mission, became the first foreign civilian plane to land at the airport since the 1991 Gulf War.

Iraq signed last month a free trade zone agreement with Egypt, followed by a similar deal with Damascus -- Albawaba.com
