Bangladesh to Officially Mourn Assad's Death

Bangladesh is to observe a national day of mourning for Syrian president Hafez Assad, officials said Monday. 

The national flag will fly at half-mast across the predominantly Muslim country to coincide with Assad's funeral on Tuesday. 

Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajed will be among world leaders attending the funeral of the Syrian leader, officials said, adding that she is due to leave late Monday for Damascus. 

Bangladesh and Syria are both members of the 56-member Organization of Islamic Conference, based in the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. 

Earlier the Bangladesh government expressed its condolences to Syria over the death of 69-year-old Assad, who died on Saturday, reportedly from a heart attack - DHAKA (AFP)
