Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak charged that Palestinian President Yasser Arafat “is not standing behind what he promised to [former prime minister] Shimon Peres,” during their meeting late Wednesday.
Barak was speaking on the Israeli radio Thursday evening hours after he and Arafat were due to issue a joint statement declaring the agreement, but it was postponed for “problems,” according to the Israeli radio. The Israeli TV said that technical difficulties were behind the delay.
Peres had said that the Israelis and Palestinians have drawn up a timetable to end the violence, and get back to normal relations.
"Under this agreement on ending the violence, if after two days there are no shootings or burials, a new situation would be created which will enable us to talk about normalizing relations," Peres said.
This would include lifting the Israeli blockade on the Palestinian territories and allowing free movement, and resuming peace negotiations, he added.
Meanwhile, a Palestinian official confirmed that the Palestinian Authority had reached an understanding with Israel to halt the violence.
"We reached an understanding to stop the violence," presidential secretary Tayeb Abdel Rahim told AFP.
