The unidentified body of a man bearing torture marks was found on a bridge in the restive Indonesian province of Aceh Thursday, the state Antara news agency reported.
The man had been dead for about six hours when he was found early Thursday, and his body bore serious slash wounds, district police chief Adjutant Senior Commissioner Sayed Husaini said quoted by the Antara news agency.
He was found five kilometers (three miles) from the provincial capital of Banda Aceh in the Cot Ilie Ulee Kareeng area.
Husaini added that police did not know whether the dead man was a member of the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) or an ordinary civilian.
The rebels have been fighting for an independent Islamic state on the northern tip of Sumatra island since the mid-1970s.
More than 850 people died in 2000 in violence related to clashes between the rebels and government troops despite a shaky truce in force since June.
Pressure for a vote on self-rule has intensified in Aceh, a staunchly Muslim province on the northern tip of Sumatra island, since East Timor broke away from Indonesia in 1999 after a UN-conducted ballot.
