Bosnian Serb Dusko Tadic, a former cafe owner who was convicted for war crimes in Bosnia, will serve a 20-year jail term in Germany, a spokesman for the war crimes tribunal said Wednesday.

Tadic, 44, was found guilty on May 7, 1997 of war crimes and crimes against humanity while he was serving as a guard in 1992 at the Serb-run detention camp for Moslems at Omarska.

His sentence was reduced from 25 to 20 years on appeal in January.

The Bosnian Serb, who is currently in a prison in The Hague, will be transferred to his German jail "very shortly," a spokesman for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) said.

However, the spokesman refused to give the German prison's name or location.

Tadic was arrested in Munich in February 1994 and handed over to the ICTY in April the following year. The ICTY said he would be jailed in Germany because that is where he was arrested.

The German justice ministry said in a statement on Tuesday that it had agreed to take Tadic after a request by the ICTY, which does not have its own prison.

The ICTY had turned to United Nations member nations to execute sentences it hands down -- THE HAGUE (AFP)
