Korean Teenager Replaces Tiger Woods as Youngest Ever US Amateur Champion
Proof of what can you can achieve in the right environment says Bradenton Head
Korean-born teenager Byeong-Hun ‘Ben’ An, made history earlier this week, when he became the youngest ever winner of the US Amateur Championship, ten days before he celebrates his18th birthday.
In winning the event, An supplanted Tiger Woods as the youngest Amateur Champion in the 109-year-old history of the Championship.
An is a high school senior at Bradenton Preparatory Academy in Florida, and will enroll at the University of Southern California on a full scholarship later this year, where he is sure to make a big impression on the golf team.
And while he was busy winning the US Amateur Championship last week, Bradenton Preparatory Academy, Dubai, a new school based at Dubai Sports City was making history of another kind, opening its doors for the first time ever.
According to Bradenton Preparatory Academy Head of School, Dr. Michael Gemma, An’s achievements are a tribute to the Bradenton Academy curriculum, which promotes athletic endeavour and academic success:
“We were all delighted to read of ‘Ben’s’ wonderful achievement and everyone associated with Bradenton Prep at Dubai Sports City are very proud of his accomplishments. Bradenton Prep allows students access to state-of-the-art sporting academies and specifically designed coaching programmes.
We have long experience of working with students so they can effectively combine their sporting endeavours with the academic curriculum,” added Gemma.
Among Bradenton Prep’s unique advantages is the proximity of the Sports Academies Campus at Dubai Sports City. According to Claude Harmon, Director of Instruction at the Butch Harmon School of Golf at Sports City, providing young children with the opportunity to play sport and receive the best possible coaching in world-class facilities, will hopefully lead to similar success stories in the future:
“We are encouraged and excited by the opening of Bradenton Preparatory Academy at Dubai Sports City. Everyone at the Butch Harmon School of Golf is looking forward to work with the young students, teaching them the fundamentals of golf and helping to develop their talent for years to come. All the Academies at Dubai Sports City will be working closely with Bradenton Prep students to introduce a range of sports to them, delivered in a fun, social environment.”
Bradenton Preparatory Academy’s philosophy is to develop well-rounded students, with the capacity to achieve success, whether it is academic, sporting or artistic.
“We encourage students to take an active part in physical activity from a young age. We believe that physical exercise and sport in general can be fun, inclusive and enjoyable. The synergy between Bradenton Preparatory Academy and the Academies Campus at Dubai Sports City means that students have access to the best facilities and coaches in the world. And maybe one day, we will produce a Champion Golfer of our own from Bradenton Preparatory Academy in Dubai,” concluded Michael Gemma.
