Brazil's Helio Castroneves, following his first career triumph, captured pole position in Portland, Oregon Saturday for Sunday's Championship Auto Racing Teams GI Joe's 200.
Castroneves, the Team Penske driver who last week won in Detroit, set a track record with a top speed of 122.768-mph (196.428 k/hr) in a Honda-powered Reynard.
Fellow Brazilian and Penske teammate Gil de Ferran, the defending champion, will start on the outside of row one.
De Ferran, who was runner-up in 1996 and 1997, gave team owner Roger Penske his 100th victory by winning at Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
Another Brazilian, Roberto Moreno, took third in time trials in his Cosworth-powered Reynard. Scotland's Dario Franchitti qualified fourth followed by Sweden's Kenny Brack and Brazil's Christian Fittipaldi.
Colombia's Juan Montoya failed in his bid to match Mario Andretti and Danny Sullivan as the only CART drivers to start five consecutive races on the pole. Montoya will start eighth.
CART points leader Paul Tracy of Canada will start 18th in the eighth race of the 20-event schedule. He enters with 59 points, five ahead of American Jimmy Vasser, who starts 15th. Moreno is third, seven points off the lead.
The 112-lap race is set to start at 5 pm EDT - (Several Sources)
