Spice Girl Mel B’s marriage broke down because she underwent cosmetic surgery that prevented her from breast-feeding her baby, her estranged husband Jimmy Gulzar said Monday, according to ABC online.
The 33-year-old dancer said Mel B, 27, also known as Scary Spice, had flown to Los Angeles three months after giving birth to their daughter Phoenix Chi and had a breast enhancement operation that she kept secret from him until it was already done. A spokeswoman for the pop star declined to comment, reported ABC.
"Mel knew I was dead against it because it meant she would no longer be able to breast-feed Phoenix," Gulzar told Britain’s top-selling tabloid, the Sun. "I felt Phoenix should come first. I wanted her to be strong and healthy, and all the advice was that breast milk is best."
Gulzar, who met Mel in 1998 when he was hired as a dancer for a Spice Girls world tour, said he had refused to make love to her for three months after she returned because he felt so betrayed, causing a rift that led to the breakdown of their relationship. "Mel begged and pleaded with me to make love to her but I refused," he said. "The truth is I didn’t want to have sex with her. I wouldn’t have gone near her with a barge pole after the way she betrayed me." Mel B told the Mirror newspaper Saturday that breaking up with Gulzar had been so painful that it had nearly killed her, and that she had felt "vulnerable and alone" after their split. "I spent a lot of time on my own, meditating, just trying to keep grounded and get through it," she said. "Breaking up was hard because we so wanted to be a happy family." Gulzar said the singer, whose real name is Melanie Brown, had often broken down while pregnant during the Spice Girls" tour, saying she wanted to quit, and had been devastated when best friend Geri Halliwell left the band. She worried about losing her "Scary" image once she was a mother, partied into the early hours while he looked after Phoenix Chi and shouted abuse at him when he challenged her, he said. The couple, who shared a $3.7 million mansion until last Christmas, will take their divorce battle to court this month, the Sun said-Albawaba.com.
