Britain launches first airstrikes in Syria against Daesh

Published December 3rd, 2015 - 06:30 GMT

British air force Tornado jets launched their first strikes against Daesh positions in Syria, the BBC reported early Thursday, citing the Defence Ministry.

The strikes came hours after parliament approved the strikes, and means that Britain joins countries including the United States, France and Russia in targeting the extremist group in Syrian territory.

The British Parliament voted decisively 397-223 late Wednesday in favour of launching airstrikes against Islamic State.

The Royal Air Force is already taking part in air operations in Iraq against the extremist militia.

Daesh forces control large stretches of Iraq and Syria, where they have moved to set up a governing structures adhering to an extreme interpretation of Islamic law.
