BSG, distributors of business intelligence solutions in the Middle East, announced today that it has taken a strategic decision to discontinue selling and distributing Business Objects products, and has teamed up with Cognos (NASDAQ: COGN; TSX: CSN), the world leader in business intelligence and corporate performance management (CPM), to deploy Cognos solutions throughout the region.

The Middle East IT industry has evolved significantly in recent years, and organisations have realised the benefits of business intelligence and performance management systems. BSG specialises in providing a comprehensive suite of solutions and services that enable enterprises of all sizes to efficiently manage business critical data. According to the latest IDC reports, UAE and Saudi Arabia lead the business intelligence market, which is worth US $ 25 million. The total Gulf market is estimated to be worth around US $32-33 million and early adopters making use of BI’s analytical features are engineering much of its double-digit growth in the region, states the IDC report.

“BSG was the only platinum distributor for Business Objects (BO) BI solutions in the region since 1995, until Business Objects acquired Crystal Decisions in 2003, resulting in a dual regional distribution model. We have now decided to broaden our position as the leading provider of BI solutions,” said Nasser Tufail, managing director, BSG.

“Next generation BI software has to be based on a single server architecture, combining reporting, analysis, event management, metrics, scorecarding, and ETL in a zero-footprint unified environment. The solutions also have to work with any kind of relational and multi-dimensional data.”

“In order to continue to serve the best interests of our customers, we realised that we needed to round out our business intelligence solutions with leading-edge, tightly integrated CPM, budgeting, planning, forecasting and consolidation offerings. We looked at the new Cognos 8 BI and it provides the most comprehensive organic integration of all of Cognos’ software applications. Cognos 8 BI operates on a single Web services based architecture, delivering the complete range of functionality and capable of addressing every customer requirement,” added Tufail.

“We are delighted to have one of the foremost BI solution providers, with unrivaled experience and pedigree in the region, join with Cognos to serve our customers’ BI requirements,” said David Brierley, regional manager, Cognos Middle East, Greece and Turkey. “BSG’s market presence, its demonstrable BI expertise and domain knowledge is well recognised. We are excited about the opportunity to leverage the functionality of Cognos’ products with BSG’s expertise.”

BSG customers include some of the most prominent names in the region like Mashreq Bank, Saudi American Bank, Qatar Petrochemical Co., ADNOC, Standard Chartered Bank, Al Marai Dairy, Commercial Bank of Dubai, National Bank of Dubai, Occidental Petroleum, L’Oreal and Saudi Telecom.

“More and more organisations are viewing metrics and performance management to be increasingly important to their overall BI strategy. Customers now need scalable, enterprise-wide solutions. Teaming up with the world’s leading BI/CPM vendor will help us address our customer needs better.
BSG intends to work closely with all our customers to ensure a smooth transition and look forward to continuing our association with them,” added Tufail.
