US President George W. Bush may appoint Edward Djeredjian, former US ambassador to Israel and Syria, as special envoy to the Middle East, reported Israel Radio on Thursday.

Diplomatic sources in Jerusalem said there was a growing realization in the White House and the US State Department of the need for the Bush administration to appoint a special envoy to the Middle East.

“The main reason for this, said the sources, was the huge workload being carried by Secretary of State Colin Powell and the fact that he was being forced to devote an ever-increasing amount of time to the escalating violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip – Albawaba.com
