Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper made an unexpected visit to Iraq, meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi Saturday, reported AP.

Harper expressed his support for combating extremist militant group Daesh, which controls territory in Iraq.  Canada is a member of a U.S.-led international coalition currently targeting Daesh positions in Iraq and Syria.

Al-Abadi called Canada’s involvement “essential” in the fight against Daesh militants, according to AP.
