The candidate of the opposition Nasserist Party was elected chief of Egypt's journalists' union Wednesday, defeating the government's nominee, according to final results.
Jalal Araf, a reporter with the Al-Akhbar daily, won 1,758 votes compared to just 1,475 for Salah Muntasar, an editor on the government daily Al-Ahram.
The Nasserist Party is opposed to Egypt's peace treaties with Israel as well as its liberal economic policies.
