A correspondent for the US television network CNN was shot as he was covering deadly clashes between Israelis and Palestinians at the Karni crossing point between the Gaza Strip and Israel on Tuesday.
Gaza City's Shifa hospital said CNN correspondent Ben Wedeman was shot with a live round and described his condition as "moderate."
Wedeman, CNN's Cairo bureau chief, was among a group of journalists who came under fire while filming the clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinians in which three Palestinians were killed, an AFP photographer said.
CNN reported that Wedeman had apparently been caught in crossfire and that his injuries were not life-threatening.
"According to CNN producers who witnessed the incident, Wedeman was lying down as Palestinians and Israelis exchanged fire when a bullet struck him on his right side, entering near his waist and exiting near under his right arm," CNN said on its website.
The AFP photographer, who was among those caught in the firing, said Israeli tanks fired machine-guns and four shells in the direction of the reporters.
Army spokesman Yarden Vatikay said Israeli forces had opened fire in the area in response to shooting from armed Palestinians.
"The army adamantly rejects any claim of fire intentionally directed at journalists," an army statement said. "The army is doing everything it can to ensure the safety of innocent citizens in general and particularly the press in the areas of riots." – GAZA CITY (AFP)
