Under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Omar Bin Sulaiman, Governor of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Managing Director of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, Cuadro Fine Art Gallery unveiled Realism Redefined, an exhibition of the works of contemporary realist artists at its gallery in DIFC’s Gate Village. The exhibition will run from 7 January to 31 March, 2009.

Bashar Al Shroogi, the Founder of Cuadro Fine Art Gallery said: “Realism Redefined seeks to draw attention to a style once considered confined to the realm of the classical masters by resurrecting it in a new light. With the same passion that Cuadro presented striking contemporary abstract art in our first show, we are now turning the curatory tables and reinterpreting the old masters for Dubai. We have gone to great lengths to bring contemporary art in multiple media, which has never before been seen or exhibited in Dubai.”

The exhibition highlights the style created by classical masters, resurrected in a contemporary light. While classical realists relied on attention to detail and technique in striving to recreate details of a harsh, gritty reality, the artists featured in Realism Redefined, such as Spaniards Juan Bautista Nieto and Sergio Martinez and Americans David Hewitt and Lionel Kalish, challenge the oeuvre by juxtaposing romantically classical forms with starkly minimalist spaces. While reviving classical skill and craftsmanship, they bring theatre to realism – as fantasy, rather than reality. The works also introduce the audiences to the intricate methods created and perfected by the old masters.

In line with Cuadro’s educational objectives, Realism Redefined will be supported by a lecture series.  Artist and Professor David Hewitt will conduct a talk on realism techniques using the works currently on exhibit as teaching references. The lectures are open to the public and will be announced in the next few days.

Abdulla Bin Sougat, Chief Executive Officer of DIFC Lifestyle Group, said: “The works showcased in Realism Redefined use techniques of the old masters, but reinterpret classical-realist conventions to produce paintings that present stunning visual perspectives. Exhibitions like this will serve to engage audiences and provide a rich cultural experience within the financial district. As part of creating a vibrant lifestyle experience within the Dubai International Financial Centre, DIFC Lifestyle Group hosts and supports exhibitions that feature the works of leading international and regional artists.”

Saeed Al Nabouda, Chief Projects Officer of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority said: “Exhibitions like Realism Redefined will provide an impetus for spreading greater awareness and appreciation of contemporary movements in international art in Dubai. Such events will also play a key role in enriching the art dialogue in the city, which is witnessing a new wave of interest in contemporary art. The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority is keen to support and encourage events that foster the appreciation of new art from across the globe. Exhibitions such as Realism Redefined will also support Dubai’s larger effort to develop into the regional hub for global art and culture.”

Located in the heart of the Gate Village in DIFC, Cuadro Fine Art Gallery opened its doors to the public in November, 2008. The establishment of the gallery promises to further increase the already high appetite for contemporary art in Dubai.
