Cummings Lands Record 12th Emirates Melbourne Cup
Legendary trainer Bart Cummings continued his record breaking run in the Emirates Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, saddling his12th winner of the 3,200 metre Group One when Viewed just held on to beat the Luca Cumani-trained Bauer by a nose.
The ‘race that stops a nation’ did just that as the 100,000 plus strong crowd watched in awe as Viewed, the mount of Blake Shinn, claimed Australia’s richest race. The win came 43 years after Cummings first won the race and 50 years after he sent out his first Emirates Melbourne Cup runner.
Shinn, who was winning the race for the first time, took the lead with Viewed two furlongs from home and looked to be en-route to an easy victory. However, Geelong Cup winner Bauer, the mount of Corey Brown, was running on well and just missed out in a photo. The result meant that Cumani had to once again settle with the runner-up position; just as he had to do a year ago with Purple Moon.
Two lengths back in third was John Sadler’s C’Est La Guerre, with Master O’Reilly, trained by Danny O’Brien, in fourth.
Later in the afternoon Annenkov, partnered by Luke Nolen, won the Emirates Airline Plate over 1,800 metres.
Throughout the day, Emirates hosted its guests in its destination-themed marquee, which this year was based on Austria, one of the over 100 destinations which the airline flies to non-stop from Dubai.
