Rescue workers found the bodies of two more hikers in the Italian Alps on Monday, bringing the death toll from a string of weekend accidents to 12.

Ten people died in the Bergamo region, northeast of Milan, on Sunday in two separate incidents. The bodies of two other climbers were found on Monte Baldo on Monday, in the northeastern region of Verona.

The victims are believed to have fallen to their deaths after slipping on ice patches. One of the dead, Luigi Lazzaretti, was trying to recover his sleigh-dog when he fell 200 metres (yards) to his death.

Alpine authorities have warned hikers about the serious dangers in the region caused by unseasonably mild weather. The risk of an avalanche is particularly high, Alpine rescuers said -- ROME (AFP)
