The FBI arrested Defense Department analyst Larry Franklin on Wednesday on charges that he illegally conveyed classified information about potential Iranian-backed attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq to employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobby group.

The AIPAC members are suspected of passing the information onto representatives of the Israeli embassy in Washington.

Franklin, 58, turned himself in Wednesday, FBI spokeswoman Debra Weierman said. According to The AP, he was scheduled to make an initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Virginia later in the day.

FBI agents have twice searched AIPAC offices as part of the investigation.
