Dubai Customs started to execute a number of events for the elderly inline with the world's celebrations of the International Day of Older Persons which is celebrated on October 1st every year. A delegation from the Department paid a visit to Al Shuwab Elderly Center and a number of hospitals where they met seniors and presented them with memorial gifts to recognize their presence and what they have offered to the community.

Mrs. Feryal Tawakul, Executive Director of Community Affairs and Government Partnership Division at Dubai Customs stressed Dubai Customs' moral commitment to social responsibility serving all society segments and categories especially the elderly "Our parents and grandparents whose contributions to the UAE which led to more development and prosperity cannot be overlooked." She said. Mrs. Tawakul added:" Interacting with this precious category is carried on throughout the whole year especially on religious and national occasions inline with our gracious Islamic teachings which urge us to treat parents and grandparents well. It is also a major component of our inherent Emirati traditions that are being adopted and anchored by our wise leadership." She stated that reaching out to the elderly is embodied in events that target them particularly on this day which is dedicated to them.

She pointed out that H.E. Ahmed Butti Ahmed, Dubai Customs Director General issued last August- inline with World Humanitarian Day celebrations- that employees at the Department will volunteer to work in a humanitarian organization for a paid working day. Those employees will have the freedom to choose the type of the voluntary work they wish to perform. This is to cultivate and raise awareness of voluntary work culture among employees. The decision was well-received by the Department's employees who aspire to participate in charitable and humanitarian action.

Promoting catering to the elderly by Dubai Customs, Mrs. Tawakul added that a team of voluntary employees from different grades was created to visit Al Shuwab Center and the hospitals before Eid Al Fitr and they greeted them on this occasion and handed them gifts.

Mrs. Tawakul said that events introduced to the elderly are at the top of the programs prepared during the holy month of Ramadan, Eid Al Fitr, Eid Al Adha and the National Day besides other ongoing visits around the year. "In order to accomplish a significant strategic goal for the Department, that is reinforcing social development." She said.
