A successful student of the British University in Dubai finished third in the finals of the Young Project Manager Award 2007, hosted by the International Project Management Association (www.ipma.ch).

Imran Malik became one of the finalists at the 21st IPMA World Congress. His accomplishments were recognised at the ceremony being held this week in Kraków, Poland.

Malik is one of the first project managers from the region to reach the final of this international competition – beating delegates from 51 other countries – with a successful nomination reflecting the growing global interest in the projects being undertaken within the United Arab Emirates.

The IPMA is the world’s oldest project management organisation, and the Young Project Manager Award is designed to recognise individuals who are making a difference to the profession of project management.

Project managers from around the world apply for this award, but only three are selected and invited to the annual IPMA World Congress.

“This nomination represents a triumphant recognition of the value of the Masters Degree in Project Management.  It is the contribution of gifted and talented individuals such as Imran Malik that makes BUiD such a rich learning environment,” said Dr. Kasim Randeree, Programme Director, Master of Science in Project Management, Institute of Engineering, The British University in Dubai

Malik, who is an employee of telecommunications giant du, received the nomination for his work on a variety of high-end technical and quality management projects.

“This nomination is an acknowledgement of my management experience and my professional execution of numerous projects during the last 20 months. It would not have been possible without the skills I acquired while taking the MSc programme at BUiD and without the backing of Dubai International Academic City who have sponsored my trip to IPMA World Congress in Krakow,” said Malik. “The tremendous support and assistance of my employer du have been equally essential to the sharing of my ideas and experiences with a wider audience.”

Sponsorship has been pivotal to circulating BUiD’s professional message, and this conference was no different. “We at Dubai Knowledge Village and Dubai International Academic City are totally committed to our business partners through supporting them and sponsoring their students and events that they organize. Sponsoring Imran Malik is a testament to our sincere commitment to the university sector,” said Dr. Ayoub Kazim, Executive Director of Dubai Knowledge Village and Dubai International Academic City.

In addition to praising his professional work, judges commended Malik’s activities at the British University. In 2006, he was the first student from BUiD to speak at an international conference hosted by the University of Birmingham, UK.

“The achievements of our students and graduates alike are a glowing reflection of both their own efforts and of the positive influence of the University. BUiD will continue to strive for the highest possible standards of achievement and success in international competitions like the Young Project Manager Award,” said Vice-Chancellor Dr. Abdullah M. Alshamsi, British University in Dubai.
