Dubai Modern High School, a GEMS education school, recently organised a trip to London for 30 dramatically talented students of the senior school (grades 9-12) to hone their singing, acting and dancing skills in a series of theatre workshops and masterclasses in the UK capital.
Held in venues close to London's famous West End, the workshops included Devising Theatre Masterclass on Billy Elliot' which combined singing, acting and dancing; and a musical theatre masterclass workshop based on popular musicals Wicked and Billy Elliot. The workshops took students through basic acting skills including the use of facial muscles and voice training to build comfort and confidence while performing. Students also had the opportunity to direct, produce and act in self made skits, got to exercise their vocal talents and learned partner carrying techniques in dance.
Outside of the workshops, students had a chance to watch various genres of musicals from Wicked and We Will Rock You to The Phantom of the Opera and Billy Elliot.
"The trip was a memorable experience. We learned so much about ourselves as well as the art of acting and have a great amount of fun," said Disha Korla, a participating DMHS student. "This was more than just a school trip or drama for us but was truly an eye opener and allowed us to mature remarkably. We have been able to discover our true potential through this trip."
"The visit to London and the masterclasses, workshops and musicals were a great experience for our students, who have now come back more expressive and confident," said Muniza Khan Bose, one of the teachers at Dubai Modern school who lead the students on the trip. "Many students have shown a keen interest in taking acting further and we also discovered quite a few hidden talents through this trip. Overall, the trip really benefited our students and we hope to continue to offer such experiences for them."
The program was open to all Dubai Modern High School students who were dramatically inclined and the trip was organized by European Study Tours.
