Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has been the first Arab leader to congratulate Donald Trump for being elected US president.

In a statement on Wednesday, Sisi said he was looking forward to bolstering cooperation ties between Egypt and the US

He voiced hope “Trump’s term in office will see breathing a new spirit in the course of Egyptian-US relations and further cooperation and coordination”.

Republican nominee Trump won the White House on Wednesday, beating his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in a stunning victory that shocked world markets.

Egyptian-US relations have nosedived following the ouster of long-serving president Hosni Mubarak in a popular uprising in 2011.
