After checking a reported stolen car near the Egyptian capital of Cairo on Monday, security forces had to defuse a bomb placed inside that was primed to explode, security officials said.
The interior ministry stated the stolen car was found near a petrol station on the road to the city of Suez.
After seeing three people park the car and leave on foot, an employee of the petrol station sought help. Residents say the petrol station belongs to the army and the believed target was to be a passing convoy expected later that day.
This type of set up for explosion is becoming more common in the region. Earlier this year in September, interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim managed to escape unhurt from a roadside bombing. In a similar attack, 11 soldiers were killed when their bus was targeted in Sinai on November 20.
Since Morsi’s ousting in the summer of 2013, police and soldiers have become prime targets of such attacks.
Dozens of members of the security forces have been targeted and killed, especially in the Sinai Peninsula of northeast Egypt.
