For the first time since Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, Egypt has allowed building materials to cross over the Rafah border into the Occupied Palestinian land, Reuters reported on Saturday.

A convoy, containing construction materials donated by Qatar, was sent from Egypt in to Gaza on Saturday, according to Egyptian border official sources.

Speaking to Reuters, Ehab al-Ghsain, head of the Hamas government media office, said:"We hope that Egypt will open this crossing permanently for goods so our people can meet their needs,"

Qatar has pledged an additional $400 million in aid for Gaza, following the Emir's visit to the Strip in October this year.
