Egyptian prosecutors have charged US-Egyptian rights activist Saadeddin Ibrahim with having contacts with US intelligence services, which carries up to 25 years' hard labor, his lawyer told AFP Sunday.
State security investigators brought the new charge against the prominent activist on Saturday after taking him from his cell in Tura prison for a new round of questioning in their headquarters, lawyer Farid al-Dib said.
Dib said Ibrahim was being interrogated again Sunday, but could not provide further details on the charge of "having contacts with United States intelligence services" as he was attending the questioning.
He said Ibrahim, director of the Ibn Khaldun Center for democracy and human rights, had been earlier charged with "trying to bribe public officials of the Egyptian state television."
The prosecutors had previously accused him of "forgery, fraud, taking bribes from abroad, harming the interests of the country and violating military order number four of 1992 prohibiting obtaining funds from foreign parties without authorization." - CAIRO (AFP)
