Egypt's Gezira team defeated its compatriot Ahli 53/51, snatching the title of the 14th Arab Basketball Championship in Dubai Friday.
Gezira, the 1993 title holders, fought hard to grab the cup from Ahli, who led an early pressure, surpassing the former with 15 points, 17/2 only in the 7th minute.
In the 10th minute, Gezira's coach, Fathi Shehadeh called for time out to revive the spirit his stunned players.
It worked out, Shehadeh’s instructions seemed to have found their way, as his boys broke through their opponents’ defense, minimizing the difference to 1 point only by the end of the first half, 31/30.
That was not all for the reinvigorated team. Early in the second half, they put more effort and determination to lead. They did it when Ahmad Abu Futouh dumped 2 points in Ahli's basket, 32/31.
This inspired Gezira's players who then stretched their score to 7 points. Ahli's coach, Ashraf Tawfiq, called for a time out and did a couple of substitutions. The tactics paid off as his team tied just seconds before the final buzzer, 51/51.
But Gezira's Ahmad Saqir had something else to say when he scored the breaking points for 53/51 – (Several Sources)
