The Emirates Environmental Group, in a great achievement, revealed that its Million Tree Campaign has successfully planted and facilitated the planting of more than 2 million trees in a span of just 4 years.
This great feat was achieved due to a significant contribution by the Emirates Heritage Club, which planted 450,000 Mangrove trees this year as part of the Million Tree Campaign. This contribution, on the part of the Emirates Heritage Club, is part of a national environmental initiative that aims to uphold the country as one of the most important global environmental players in conserving biodiversity. This contribution has also helped EEG exceed its earlier-stated goal of planting one million trees as part of its support to the Billion Tree Campaign of the United Nations Environment Programme. Through this campaign, EEG aims to activate the role of the community in undertaking environmental responsibility and commitment.
Ali Abdullah Al Rumaithi, Executive Director of programs at the Emirates Heritage Club stated: "We at the Emirates Heritage Club are proud of what we have achieved towards preserving our environment, and to actively participate in expanding green areas. This is one form of showing our loyalty to the founder of this country, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, on his sixth death anniversary, as the environment was one of his biggest concerns. Our actions are also a response to the guidance and aspirations of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, who has always focused on the importance of preserving our environment, inculcating it in our behavior and culture. With thanks to Allah and the continuous support of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Representative of His Highness, the President of UAE, Chairman of Emirates Heritage Club, the club has wholeheartedly undertaken the responsibility in contributing to the Million Tree Campaign, led by the Emirates Environmental Group. We have contributed more than 1.5 million mangrove trees in Samalia Island and other islands in Abu Dhabi as His Highness believes in the importance of maintaining these trees due to their great benefits to the marine environment, and effects in increasing fish stocks, and preserving the costal areas from erosion."
Ms. Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of EEG, thanked the Emirates Heritage Club for this great contribution and support to the Million Tree Campaign, for the second time. This contribution comes in continuation of the legacy of the great late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who has worked on large-scale conversion of the desert to be green gardens, feeding and sustaining people and life.
Ms. Al Marashi said that the EEG has organized many tree planting activities over the past years, as part of its aims and goals to combine its efforts to the global trend to deal with the climate change and global warming, as well as to support the National Strategy of the government to preserve and protect our ecosystem. EEG is working to encourage and cultivate indigenous trees, as these trees are well adapted to our harsh desert conditions, high temperatures and water scarcity, in addition to the salinity of the soil. Also, these trees are part of the national heritage as it lived and associated with our land long time ago.
Ms. Al Marashi called on all the institutions, companies, families and individuals in the country to support the campaign by planting more trees. These trees will be added on behalf of people who planted them in the lists of contributors around the world, who are supporting the "Plant for the Planet - Billion Tree Campaign".
