Emirates SkyCargo achieved record total revenues of Dh1.1 billion and uplifted 335,194 tons in the 2000-01 financial year, The Gulf News reported Wednesday.

Tonnage carried increased 24.2 percent and revenue growth was up 25.1 percent on the previous year.

According to the paper, SkyCargo contributed 17.3 percent to Emirates Group operating revenue, while it accounted for 18.4 percent of airline transport revenues for the year. Two leased Boeing 747 freighters on the Dubai to Amsterdam and Dubai to Hong Kong routes made up 20.8 per cent of its total cargo revenues.

There was strong demand for cargo capacity from Asia Pacific to Europe and from Europe to the Middle East. But volumes dropped in the fourth quarter of the year because of slower economic growth, said the daily.

Emirates cargo director Ram Menen was quoted by the Gulf paper as saying that “SkyCargo's core capacity continues to be belly space in Emirate's wide-bodied passenger aircraft, supplemented by leased freighters.

The smallest Emirates aircraft can carry 17 tons of cargo. "Our core capacity is in the bellies of aeroplanes," said Menen. "The uniqueness of our fleet is the wide body, so we can carry cargo on short and long hauls.” – Albawaba.com
