The European Union and Algeria will sign a partnership agreement during the current year, according to head of the European Commission Romano Prodi on Saturday.

The Algerian news service (APS) quoted the European official as saying at a press conference in Algiers that he had discussed with President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika all the problems facing Algerian-European ties, particularly those of a multilateral nature.

He added that the meeting also discussed the financial and administrative aspects of cooperation so that “decisions can be made as soon as possible.”

Prodi told reporters that merger of the Maghreb countries is not a prerequisite for European investments in Algeria.

The EC chief and Algerian Prime Minister Ali ben Flisse signed last Saturday three agreements of cooperation worth 30 million euros – Albawaba.com
