A top-level European Union (EU) mission flew from Cairo to Tel Aviv Saturday afternoon on the way to Ramallah in the West Bank, where talks with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat are scheduled, an AFP correspondent reported.

Led by Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstad, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency until the end of the year, the mission earlier discussed the moribund Israeli-Palestinian peace process with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The group also includes European Commission President Romano Prodi, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Javier Solana and Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel.

After meeting Arafat, the delegation is due to travel Saturday night to Jerusalem for talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Parliament Speaker Avraham Burg -- TEL AVIV, Nov 17 (AFP)
