The European Commission on Thursday said it was releasing $7.9 million to fund humanitarian operations in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.

The aid will be channeled through Echo, the EU's humanitarian aid wing, to help Palestinian and other vulnerable populations in the area, said a statement.

The aid will be aimed at helping refugees and other conflict victims to rebuild houses, and to establish health care and water supplies.

The commission said it had given a total of some 68 million euros in aid to the Middle East from 1993 to 1999 - BRUSSLES (AFP)
