Expand Networks Selected for XLHealth Server Based Computing Project

Published May 3rd, 2009 - 07:37 GMT

Expand Networks www.expand.com, the leader in optimizing WANs for branch office consolidation and virtualization, today announced XLHealth, owner of one of the largest Medicare chronic condition Special Needs Plans and a leader in improving the quality of care for seniors with chronic illness, has deployed Expand Networks WAN Optimization technology to optimize the delivery of Microsoft Terminal Services and bring users into virtual proximity of application and datacenter services.
XLHealth operates a server based computing infrastructure with remote users accessing centralized applications and data over Microsoft Terminal Services. Employees in the company’s branch offices regularly review plan records but the size of the files, in combination with latency on the WAN, damaged application performance, undermining the server based function. XLHealth evaluated and selected Expand Networks for its unique ability to monitor, optimize, and control the interactive RDP sessions of Microsoft Terminal Services and improve performance in the branch office.
“The employees in our branch offices manually review select plan records to ensure they are accurate and processed correctly. With over 55,000 members, there are literally hundreds of thousands of files that need to be accessed from the datacenter. The response times were painfully slow with employees waiting several seconds to scroll a PDF file page severely affecting their productivity and efficiency,” said Erik Peterson, XLHealth’s senior manager of infrastructure services. “We selected Expand Networks because they had a solution to optimize the delivery of Microsoft Terminal Services, mitigating latency and improving employee efficiency.”
Expand Networks’ integrated WAN Optimization technology uses techniques such as byte-level caching and dynamic compression that specifically enable the real-time interactive TCP traffic of Microsoft Terminal Services RDP to be maximized. The unique ability to monitor, optimize and control RDP traffic successfully enabled the server based computing project and delivered a superior end user experience for XLHealth’s branch office employees.
“Expand was an overnight success. Our remote users went from not being able to do their job efficiently, to working productively immediately after Expand was deployed,” continued Peterson. “The technology from Expand works as advertised, and has delivered a rapid ROI, reducing our communications costs.”
“Server based computing architectures drive efficiency and help to reduce operational costs in the business. However, when organizations become dependent on the WAN for their business application, performance and productivity deteriorates as users and applications get physically further away from one another,” said Andrew Mullen, VP of Sales, The Americas, Expand Networks. “Expand Networks can truly support server based computing projects by uniquely optimizing the interactive underlying protocols such as RDP, Citrix/ICA or Sun Ray, to maximize user productivity and reduce operational costs.”
