An explosion Thursday rocked the northeastern border town of Arsal, inflicting seven casualties and killing four, a security source told The Daily Star.

The explosion was caused by a bomb that targeted the Committee of Qalamoun Scholars, which specializes in following up with the conditions of Syrian refugees.

The Lebanese army rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area.

Islamist militants have been holed up in the rugged mountains around Arsal since they engaged in heavy clashes with the army in August 2014 after gunmen affiliated with ISIS and the Nusra Front attempted to overrun Arsal.
