ALBAWABA - According to state media reports, an Iranian policeman has been killed in an attack in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan which was later on claimed by an extremist group.
Iranian official news agency IRNA said: "In an exchange of fire this morning between forces from a police station in Rask and members of an armed group, one of the policemen was killed,".
Later on, the extremist group Jaish Al-Adl (Army of Justice) released a statement claiming responsibility for the attack over their Telegram channel. The group is deemed a "terrorist group" by the Iranian government.
At least 11 officers were killed in a similar attack on a police station in the town before dawn on December 15, AFP reported.
Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi announced new measures to firm up security along the porous border, following twin suicide bombings claimed by the Islamic State extremist group that killed more than 90 people at a high-profile state event in the southern city of Kerman. Vahidi said authorities had identified "priority points to block along the border".
Earlier this week, blasts near Qassem Soleimani's killed 94 people and left nearly 220 injured.
The first blast was 700 meters from the tomb of Qassem Soleimani while the other one was one kilometer away from the tomb and was outside the path of pilgrims and checkpoints.
According to some media reports, the explosions took place due to the blast of gas cylinders near the road leading to the shrine of Soleimani. However, IRNA said that the cause of the explosion is yet to be known.
