ALBAWABA- Rumors have emerged on social media claiming a failed assassination attempt on Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
The alleged attack was allegedly reported to be carried out by an armed group known as the "Sons of Abu Jandal," which has affiliations with Hamas as allegedly reported by Yemen Today Channel and other social media sources.
Claims also resurfaced that the group has claimed responsibility for the assault, which allegedly targeted President Abbas's convoy.
The reported incident has raised concerns and tensions in the region amidst continued Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip
However, a Palestinian official, who chose to remain anonymous, denied the rumors about the assassination attempt.
He clarified that two entirely separate incidents occurred in the West Bank and were incorrectly linked to create a false narrative of an assassination attempt on the Palestinian president. He accused Israeli media of exploiting the situation, RT reported.
The first incident involved the accidental interception of a civilian car on the route of the Palestinian president's convoy in Ramallah. The driver was briefly detained and questioned before being released.
The second incident, captured on video, depicted armed clashes related to an attempt by security forces to apprehend a drug dealer, according to the Palestinian official.
