Forming an integral part of ‘Art and Fashion 2006’, a selection of signed celebrity portraits, collected by acclaimed curator Brian Strathie, is set to grace the walls of the BurJuman between November 30th and December 3rd.
Titled “Leaders and Celebrities”, the exhibition consists of 126 photographs of past and present international movers and shakers, and takes the viewer across the 20th and 21st centuries. Subjects vary from much loved icons such as HH Sheikh Zayed, President of the UAE, HRH Princess Diana, King Hussein of Jordan, Farah, the former Empress of Iran and wife of the late Shah, Ayatollah Khomeini, Eva “Evita” Peron and Princess Grace (Kelly) of Monaco. Other famous faces also include Saddam Hussein, Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler.
Graduating from Scotland’s University of St. Andrews with a degree in Arabic, Strathie first came to the Gulf region in 1985. With a keen interest in history and politics, he began his collection with a pair of signed photographs of the 9th Sultan of Zanzibar, Khalifa bin Harub, and his wife Nunu Ahmed. From then on, his passion ensued.
“I became instantly hooked,” said Brian Strathie, curator of the Leaders and Celebrities exhibition.
“Beginning with my studies in the region, I developed a keen interest in the history of the Arab world and the people who have helped shape it. Thereafter I began to look further a field and started to amass a wider and more international collection.”
Sabina Khandwani, head of PR and marketing, BurJuman concluded, “We are delighted that our annual Art and Fashion extravaganza has been chosen by Brian as the platform to showcase this world-class collection and as a mall we remain firmly committed to supporting the burgeoning art and culture scene here in Dubai by being the conduit for artists to share their talents with the community.
