Turkish forces fired two howitzers at a Syrian army position early on Wednesday after a shell launched from Syria fell in southern Turkey.

The rocket, thought to have been fired by Syrian government forces at opponents, fell in Reyhanli district in Turkey’s southern province of Hatay.

No deaths were recorded although five residents were hurt by flying glass from broken windows.

The Turkish General Staff on Wednesday said that it had responded to the rocket fire in line with engagement rules.

Hatay Governorate said the explosion left a crater after falling into a dry stream in a field in Reyhanli at 02.35 a.m. (0035 GMT) on Wednesday.

The crater was at 15 meters wide and 7 meters deep, the statement said.

A military command post and homes close to the blast area suffered damage. Witnesses told The Anadolu Agency they fled in panic after they heard the explosion.
