UAE residents will be able to have their health examined for free at seven EHL centres across Dubai on 14th November, 2010.

The complimentary health check-ups, which include blood sugar and body mass index (BMI) tests, are in acknowledgement of World Diabetes Day, a campaign led by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the alarming rise in diabetes around the world.

For many years, Diabetes has been considered as a disease of the developed world. We now know that Diabetes can affect anyone and the occurrence of this disease has increased significantly in developing countries. Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases today. According to World Health Organization (WHO), at present diabetes affects 220 million people worldwide, many sufferers do not know they have the disorder. The WHO predicts that this number could double by the year 2025. In the UAE around 20% of population are diabetic.

A substantial proportion of type 2 diabetes is preventable, while the prevention of type 1 diabetes remains under research. The IDF provides evidence confirming that there are effective measures, largely lifestyle related, to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. "The aim of the testing is to provide residents in the UAE with a better understanding of their own risk of diabetes, to educate them about risks and warning signs, and to take preventative action," says Dr. Pietie Loubser, Chief Clinical Officer at EHL.
