As part of the Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Programme, a delegation of ten University professors visited the Department of Municipal Affairs in Abu Dhabi (DMA). The delegation was met and welcomed by His Excellency Ahmed Shareef, Under Secretary of the Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) in Abu Dhabi and the DMA Executive Directors.
Discussions between Shareef and the delegation focused on the many challenges the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is facing in dealing with its rapid population growth and maintaining its cultural identity, and the DMA's innovative strategies to successfully deal with this at a municipal level. As a result, there was a lively exchange of information on relevant key topics and service delivery in areas such as infrastructure, health, education, and early childcare.
The delegation was interested in the work being done by the DMA to provide job opportunities to Emirati women in the Municipal system. Shareef explained the various programmes and performance indicators the DMA has set to achieve an increase in the number of Emirati women working in the department.
Funded by the U.S. government, the Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Programme is taking place in the UAE for the first time. It is an initiative that aims to provide US university professors with the opportunity to travel outside the US in order to experience and learn more about a country's culture, history, and languages which they can then incorporate when developing their curricula and in their teaching.
Commenting on the visit, H.E. Shareef said "we warmly welcome this visit as it emphasises the DMA's commitment to promoting better education and understanding of our culture."
Al Shareef concluded "H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyah, may god rest his soul, laid the foundation for sustainability in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Following his lead, which is fully aligned to the vision of HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al NahyanUAE President, and with the guidance and support of HH Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the DMA is determined to achieve environmentally sustainable living for generations to come."
