A funeral has been held Monday in Egypt for a pregnant Egyptian woman stabbed to death in a German courtroom.
More than 1,000 mourners and several Egyptian government representatives were in attendance of the funeral for 32-year-old Marwa Sherbini of Alexandria.
As she was preparing to give evidence in a German courtroom, Sherbini was stabbed 18 times by a German man identified only as Axel W. She intended to give evidence against him for calling her a “terrorist” for wearing a hijab.
In the courtroom at the time was her three-year-old son Mustapha who witnessed the attack. “My daughter was pregnant in her third month,” her mother told Egypt's Al-Masri Al-Youm daily Sunday. “I never imagined she would be a victim of terrorism and we would see her pictures in the media,” she added.
In Alexandria, the local council has decided to name a street in her memory. Egyptian press has already dubbed Sherbini as the “Hijab Martyr” German embassy spokesman Magdi al-Sayed told the Egyptian Gazette, “It is a criminal act. It has nothing to do with persecution against Muslims.”
