Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) handled water gatherings and blockage of rain water in the drainage pipes as a result of heavy rain across all regions of the Capital.
Executive Director of Roads, Eng. Ahmed Malkawi, said in a press statement that GAM has declared a state of emergency in the city starting Sunday evening (17/1/2010), during which it tackled a blockage in a drainage line opposite Crown hotel adjacent to the whole sale market. The concerned teams have also treated the blockage of a water tunnel near the Palms Village.
The teams could clean the tunnel which raised the level of water, making sure of the smooth flow of water.
Engineer Malkawi also pointed to GAM’s handling of the blockage of the water drainage manhole near Abu Hureira tunnel/ Jerusalem Street caused by soil drifting. He said that the concerned teams have also managed to open another blockage in Al Mustanedah Bridge, caused by a rubber wheel, in addition to the blockage of one of the water tunnels in the ring road opposite the fiber glass factory.
GAM has also treated the rising levels of water on the street from Mercedes Bridge to the grain warehouses, in addition to water gathering in Al Hurriyah Street opposite the electricity relay station due to the lack of capacity of the water tunnel to contain 1000 mm, all owing to the heavy rainfall.
According to Eng. Malkawi, GAM cadres and Civil Defense teams could tackle the fall down of part of a wall behind Coca-Cola plant – Marka region as a result of heavy rain.
With cold asphalt mix, GAM teams have treated contractors’ service sectors near Irbed Street- Prince Hashem Street intersection, and a water excavation in Wadi Saqra.
Malkawi reiterated that GAM has called on the citizens, via a news bulletin on Jordan TV, to take all necessary precautions in the face of rising water levels in some streets.
On his part, Mayor of Amman, Omar Maani, has followed up on, in the emergency room of Tla’ Al Ali, the work process carried out by GAM troupes spread across the Capital, and was filled in by the central capital room on the flow of traffic in all the main streets and intersections.
Since Monday evening GAM has properly tackled the heavy rain water drop, being at natural rates, while water gatherings in certain locations were above natural rates, which took sometime to contain them.
