Greater Amman Municipality (GAM)’s Public Transportation Directorate launched the “Ideal Driver” initiative during an Iftar banquet held in Al-Shamal complex. Ideal Driver aims at encouraging public transport drivers to provide best services, enhance their competence, in addition to reducing traffic accidents. The initiative, which was launched under the patronage of Manager of Amman City Eng. Ammar Gharaibeh, comes to fulfill GAM’s never-ending cooperation with transportation partners to achieve a cohesive transportation system. Gharaibeh stressed that GAM is interested in enhancing working public transport drivers’ competence in Amman; “they are the core of the public transportation system which GAM aims at developing, therefore once they are more qualified then traffic will automatically improve, and we will end up with less traffic accidents.” Meanwhile, Head of the Public Transport Operations Department, Eng. Abdul Raheem Weirekat said that the initiative is based on two stages; the first, which will be implemented in 2010, focuses on enabling drivers through a practical and theoretical program which revolves around passengers safety requirements, using high technology in public transportation means such as automatic payment, navigating systems, tracking and ticketing, in addition to avoiding operational violations, providing passengers with the premium services and safety, preventing operational violations, and dealing with passengers in the best proper manner. “The other stage focuses on boosting cooperation with all relevant parties such as Public Security Directorate, Associations related to transportation, various media outlets,” he added. The launching event was attended by representatives of traffic and licensing departments, associations related to transportation and a number of public transport drivers. Celebrating the initiative, Gharaibeh awarded 20 public transportation of service taxis, cabs, and buses in Amman, which were chosen as “Ideal Drivers” according to specific standards such as being working driver, committing no operational violations or any serious traffic accidents.
