A seminar was held on Tuesday morning, 6 Apr 2010, at Al Hussein Cultural Center, titled “Woman’s political and social role in the community”; it was organized by Public Libraries Department of Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on the occasion of Woman’s International Day and the Mother’s Day, and attended by many female employees of GAM and civil society institutions.

In her speech about the political role of women, Senator Laila sharaf reviewed the main stages of the developmental process of Jordanian woman, and how Jordanian high leaderships and policies deal with women’s political rights, by means of giving women the right to elect and vote, according to the equality principle and the Constitution.

She stressed that what enables woman to play an effective role and to truly participate in the public national decision making, is education and work, as well as indiscrimination between the two genders.

She also said “the relationships which woman builds with the individuals and the communities are different from those of men. Women may possess deeper humane dimensions; therefore, many times women can have superior abilities to communicate with different social categories”.

On her part, Senator Nawal Fa’ouri, talked about woman’s social role and said “Jordanian women have realized many great achievements on the national level with the support of His Majesty King Abdullah II and His directions to the subsequent governments promoting women’s participation in the developmental process”.

Fa’ouri further highlighted the references to women in the Holy Quran and the Prophet’s (PBUH) Hadith (sayings), in which women were given all their rights regarding education and work, pointing out at women’s role in creating families that realize good citizenship.

The seminar was patronized by Director of Public Libraries Department, Hatem AL Hamlan, on behalf of the Mayor of Amman, and it aimed at defining the Jordanian women’s role politically and socially and their influence on the decision making process to prove their effectiveness.

Concluding the first day of the two day seminar, Al Hamlan honored Senator Laila Sharaf, Dr. Nawal Fa’ouri, the former president of the Women Union, Uns AL Saket, Yousef Al Dalabeeh for his support to women’s causes, GAM Council Member, Maisar Al Sa’di, and the educator Waf’a Al Nabulsi, by handing over GAM plaques to them.

Within the seminar, the attendees were introduced to the Public Libraries Department of GAM, since its inception and its mission through a TV show; a song was also performed by the child ‘Areen Al Masri from Al Rawda School in Na’our Region, on Mother’s Day.
